How to use the PayPal Fee Calculator
- Choose the country where your PayPal account is registered. Rates and fixed fees differ by country and currency.
- Choose "What I receive" to see the fee on a payment, or "What to charge" if you need to receive an exact amount after fees (for example when sending an invoice).
- Pick how the buyer pays: through PayPal Checkout, by card, with Pay Later, or as a goods & services payment.
- If the buyer is in another country, choose their region to add PayPal's international fee.
How it is calculated
Fee = amount × (rate % + international %) + fixed fee You receive = amount − fee To receive X = (X + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − (rate % + international %) ÷ 100)
A common mistake when working backwards is to add the fee percentage to the amount you want. That is slightly too little, because PayPal charges its percentage on the larger total. Dividing by (1 − rate) gives the exact figure.

How to pay less in PayPal fees
- Check your merchant rate. In the UK, sellers who processed more than £4,000 last month qualify for lower rates; in other countries you can ask PayPal for merchant rates at high volume.
- Bill in your own currency. Receiving another currency and converting it adds PayPal's conversion margin on top of the fees.
- Consider card processing for local buyers. Card payments through a payment processor such as Stripe can cost less than PayPal Checkout. Compare with the Stripe fee calculator.
- Never use "friends and family" for sales. It avoids the fee but removes PayPal's seller and buyer protection and breaks PayPal's rules for commercial payments.
What is not included
Currency conversion, chargeback and dispute fees, withdrawal fees in some countries, and fees for PayPal Here or QR-code payments in person are not included.
