How to use the eBay Fee Calculator
- Choose the eBay site you sell on. In the UK choose business or private seller; in Australia choose your plan (most small sellers have no Pro plan).
- Pick the category closest to your item. Categories with tiered rates (for example watches or jewellery) are calculated band by band.
- Enter the sale price and the shipping you charge. In the US and Canada also enter the buyer's sales tax rate, because eBay charges its fee on the tax.
- If the buyer is abroad and you ship it yourself, choose their region to add the international fee. Add a Promoted Listings rate only if the sale came from an ad.
- Add your costs to see real profit and margin, then open "Fee breakdown" to see every fee.
How it is calculated
eBay charges most of its fees on the total amount of the sale, which is the item price plus shipping plus any sales tax:
Total amount of sale = item price + shipping + sales tax
Final value fee = category % × total (tiered categories: each band at its own %)
Per-order fee = $0.30 if the total is $10 or less, otherwise $0.40 (US, CA)
£0.30 / £0.40 (UK business) · A$0.30–0.33 (AU Pro plans)
Regulatory fee = 0.35% × total (UK business sellers)
International fee = region % × total (if you ship abroad yourself)
Promoted Listings = your ad rate × total (only if the ad led to the sale)
VAT on fees = 20% × all fees (UK business sellers, reclaimable if VAT registered)
Profit = item price + shipping − fees − your costs
In Australia every fee already includes GST, and sellers without a Pro plan whose sales were A$25,000 or less over the last 12 months pay no final value fee at all. UK private sellers also pay no final value fee; they only pay 3% when the buyer is outside the UK.

How to pay less in eBay fees
- Choose the right category. Rates range from 6.7% (guitars in the US) to 15.3% (books in the US). Your item must genuinely belong in the category, but where two categories fit, the cheaper one saves money on every sale.
- Use eBay International Shipping (US and Canada). Orders sent through it do not pay the international fee.
- Keep your seller level up. Below Standard sellers pay an extra 6 percentage points (US and UK) on every sale; a very high "item not as described" rate adds another 4–5 points.
- Use promoted listings carefully. The ad rate is charged on the full sale amount, including shipping and tax, so a 10% rate on a low-margin item can wipe out the profit.
- Consider a Store or Pro plan only when the maths works. Subscriptions lower the final value fee rate, but the monthly fee must be covered by the savings.
What is not included
Insertion fees after your free monthly listings, optional listing upgrades (subtitle, bold, reserve price), Store subscriptions, shipping labels bought on eBay and currency conversion charges are not per-sale fees, so they are left out. Add any you pay to "Packaging & other costs".
Frequently asked questions
How much does eBay take from a sale in 2026?
In the US most categories pay 13.6% of the total sale (item, shipping and sales tax) plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 if the order is $10 or less). A $50 item with $8 shipping and 7% tax costs about $8.84 in fees.
Is it free to sell on eBay UK?
For private sellers, yes: there is no final value fee or regulatory fee on items sold to UK buyers, only a 3% fee when the buyer is outside the UK, plus optional upgrades. Business sellers pay a category rate (mostly 9.9% to 12.9%), a per-order fee, a 0.35% regulatory fee and VAT on fees.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Yes. In the US, Canada, the UK and Australia the final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes the shipping you charge and any sales tax eBay collects.
What changed with eBay Australia fees?
In 2026 eBay Australia made selling free for sellers without a Pro plan whose sales were A$25,000 or less over the past 12 months. Sellers above that limit move to the Pro Starter plan (13.4% + A$0.30, no monthly cost) or can choose a paid Pro plan with lower rates.
Does eBay charge a separate PayPal or payment fee?
No. eBay runs payments itself, and the final value fee already covers payment processing. There is no extra card fee on top.
