How to use the Meta Title & Description Checker

    1. Paste your page title (the SEO title, not necessarily the product name) and your meta description.
    2. Optionally add the keyword you want the page to rank for and the page address.
    3. Check the character and pixel counts and read the tips. Green means the length is in a safe range.
    4. Edit the text in the boxes until the preview reads well and nothing important is cut off.

    How the checker works

Google does not use a fixed character limit. It cuts titles and descriptions by pixel width: a title is usually shortened at about 580–600 pixels on desktop, and a description after roughly two lines (about 920 pixels in total). Wide letters such as W and M use more space than i or l, so two titles with the same number of characters can be cut at different points. This tool measures your text in the same font size Google uses (Arial, 20px for titles and 14px for descriptions) and shows both counts.

    Worked examples

Before and after: a Shopify product page

Before: title "Home | Product | BLUE CERAMIC MUG BLUE MUG CERAMIC" and no meta description. The title starts with words nobody searches for, repeats itself in capitals, and Google will write its own description from random page text.

After: title "Blue Ceramic Coffee Mug, 350 ml, Handmade | Clay & Co" (55 characters) and description "Handmade blue ceramic coffee mug that holds 350 ml. Dishwasher safe, lead-free glaze and free UK delivery on orders over £30. Order today." (138 characters).

Before and after: a guide on a seller blog

Before: "Everything You Need to Know About Selling Your Handmade Jewellery Online in the United Kingdom in 2026" is about 100 characters, so the year and location are cut off in results.

After: "How to Sell Handmade Jewellery Online in the UK (2026)" puts the main words first and fits in 54 characters.

Tips for product and shop pages

    • Lead with what the product is. Put the words a shopper would type first, then the key detail (size, material, colour), then your brand.
    • Write every description by hand for important pages. Platforms such as Shopify fill the description from the first lines of the product text, which often starts with shipping notes or sizes.
    • Give a reason to click: free delivery, a guarantee, handmade, a price or a benefit.
    • Keep titles unique. Two pages with the same title compete with each other in search.
    • Do not stuff keywords. Repeating a word three times or writing in capitals looks spammy and can make Google rewrite your title.

Google may still rewrite a title or description if it thinks another part of the page answers the search better. A clear, accurate title that matches the page content is the best way to keep yours.

    Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta title be?

Aim for 30 to 60 characters, and keep the important words in the first 50. What really matters is pixel width: Google usually cuts titles at about 580–600 pixels on desktop.

How long should a meta description be?

Around 120 to 160 characters. Shorter descriptions waste space; longer ones are usually cut off, especially on mobile.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly. But a clear, persuasive description can raise the number of people who click your result, which brings you more visitors from the same ranking.

Why does Google show a different title from the one I wrote?

Google rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords, the same across many pages, or that do not match the page content. Fix those problems and Google is more likely to use yours.

Where do I edit the SEO title in Shopify?

On the product page in the Shopify admin, scroll to "Search engine listing" and click Edit. There you can set the page title, meta description and URL handle.
