How to use the VAT Calculator (UK)

  1. Choose "Add VAT" if your amount is before VAT, or "Remove VAT" if it already includes VAT.
  2. Enter the amount and choose the rate: 20% standard, 5% reduced or 0% zero rate. For other countries choose "Other rate".
  3. Read the net amount, the VAT and the gross amount. Change the amount or rate and the result updates instantly.

How it is calculated

Add VAT: VAT = net × rate ÷ 100 gross = net + VAT
Remove VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100) VAT = gross − net

At 20%: add VAT → net × 1.2 remove VAT → gross ÷ 1.2
         VAT inside a gross price = gross ÷ 6

A common mistake when removing VAT is to take 20% off the gross price. That gives the wrong answer, because the 20% was calculated on the smaller net amount: 20% off £120 is £96, but the correct net price is £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100.

VAT for online sellers

In the UK you must register for VAT once your VAT-taxable turnover goes over the registration threshold in any rolling 12 months (check the current threshold on GOV.UK). Once registered, the prices you show customers must include VAT, and the VAT inside each sale is owed to HMRC. On Etsy and eBay, fees are charged on the VAT-inclusive price, and both platforms add 20% VAT to their own fees unless you give them your VAT number.

Use the Etsy fee calculator or eBay fee calculator with "VAT included in your price" set to 20% to see your profit as a VAT-registered seller.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove 20% VAT from a price?

Divide the price by 1.2. The result is the price without VAT; the difference is the VAT. £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100, so the VAT is £20.

How do I add 20% VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1.2. £45 × 1.2 = £54, of which £9 is VAT.

What are the UK VAT rates in 2026?

The standard rate is 20%, the reduced rate is 5% (for example domestic fuel and power, children's car seats) and the zero rate is 0% (for example most food, books and children's clothes).

What is the quickest way to find the VAT in a gross price at 20%?

Divide the gross price by 6. At 20%, VAT is always one sixth of the VAT-inclusive price.

Can I use this for other countries?

Yes. Choose "Other rate" and enter that country's VAT rate. For Australian, New Zealand, Canadian or Indian GST use the GST calculator.
