How to use the Markup Calculator

  1. Choose what you want to do: add a markup, find a markup, or convert markup to margin.
  2. Enter your cost (and price or markup percentage).
  3. Read the price, profit, markup and margin. Remember that fees and discounts come out of the selling price, so check the margin too.

How it is calculated

Price   = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100)
Markup  = (price − cost) ÷ cost × 100
Margin  = (price − cost) ÷ price × 100
Margin from markup = markup ÷ (100 + markup) × 100

Markup or margin: which should I use?

Markup is easy to apply to a supplier's price, which is why wholesalers and retailers quote it. But marketplace fees, payment fees and discounts are all taken from the selling price, so margin is the number that tells you whether you can afford them. Set prices with markup if you like, then check the margin with the profit margin calculator. The difference is explained in profit margin vs markup.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate markup?

Subtract the cost from the price, divide by the cost and multiply by 100. An item that costs $40 and sells for $60 has a 50% markup.

How do I add a markup to a cost?

Multiply the cost by (1 + markup ÷ 100). A 60% markup on $25 is 25 × 1.6 = $40.

Is a 50% markup the same as a 50% margin?

No. A 50% markup gives a 33.3% margin. To get a 50% margin you need a 100% markup.

What is a good markup for retail?

It varies widely by industry. Many retailers use around 100% (keystone), while handmade and small-batch sellers often need more to cover their time and platform fees.

Can markup be more than 100%?

Yes. Markup has no upper limit: an item bought for $10 and sold for $50 has a 400% markup (and an 80% margin).
