How to use the Marketplace Fee Calculator

  1. Choose your currency (it only changes the symbol; the maths is the same everywhere).
  2. Copy the commission or referral percentage for your product category from the marketplace's fee page or seller panel.
  3. Add any fixed, closing or per-order fee, plus the payment processing charge if the platform bills it separately.
  4. If tax is charged on the platform's fees (for example 18% GST on Indian marketplace fees), enter that rate.
  5. Enter your product, shipping and packaging costs to see profit and margin.

How it is calculated

Order total = selling price + shipping charged
Commission = commission % × selling price (or × order total if charged on shipping)
Payment fee = payment % × order total + payment fixed fee
Tax on fees = tax % × (commission + fixed fee + payment fee)
Total fees = commission + fixed fee + payment fee + tax on fees
Profit = order total − total fees − GST/VAT in your price − your costs

Most marketplaces publish fees as a percentage plus a fixed amount. If a platform uses price bands (for example a lower fixed fee for cheap items), use the fixed fee for your price band.

Worked examples

India: a ₹799 kurta on a marketplace charging 15% + ₹30

Example rates only. With 18% GST on the fees, the platform keeps more than a fifth of the price.

Buyer pays (item + shipping)₹799.00
Commission (15% of price)−₹119.85
Fixed / closing fee−₹30.00
Tax on fees (18%)−₹26.97
Your costs (item, shipping, packaging)−₹385.00

Fees: ₹176.82 (22.13%) · Payout: ₹622.18 · Profit: ₹237.18 (29.68% margin)

India: the same kurta at ₹599

Cutting the price by ₹200 cuts the profit by much more than you might expect, because costs stay the same.

Buyer pays (item + shipping)₹599.00
Commission (15% of price)−₹89.85
Fixed / closing fee−₹30.00
Tax on fees (18%)−₹21.57
Your costs (item, shipping, packaging)−₹385.00

Fees: ₹141.42 (23.61%) · Payout: ₹457.58 · Profit: ₹72.58 (12.12% margin)

US: a $40 item on a platform charging 12% including shipping, plus 2.9% + 30¢ payments

Example rates only.

Buyer pays (item + shipping)$46.00
Commission (12% of price + shipping)−$5.52
Payment processing−$1.63
Your costs (item, shipping, packaging)−$19.50

Fees: $7.15 (15.55%) · Payout: $38.85 · Profit: $19.35 (42.06% margin)

UK: a VAT-registered seller sells a £48 item at 15% commission

Example rates only. The £8 VAT inside the price belongs to HMRC.

Buyer pays (item + shipping)£48.00
Commission (15% of price)−£7.20
Tax on fees (20%)−£1.44
VAT/GST you owe on the sale−£8.00
Your costs (item, shipping, packaging)−£19.50

Fees: £8.64 (18%) · Payout: £39.36 · Profit: £11.86 (29.65% margin)

Where to find your marketplace's real fees

Fees change often and differ by category, price band and fulfilment method, so always copy them from the platform itself: the seller fee page, your seller panel's fee preview, or the fee line on a recent order settlement. Many platforms also charge for things that are not per-order fees, such as storage, advertising, returns and subscriptions. Add an average per-order amount for those to "Packaging & other costs".

Using it for your own website

For a Shopify, WooCommerce or other own-website order, set commission to 0 and enter your payment gateway's percentage and fixed fee. For Shopify specifically, the Shopify fee calculator also adds your plan cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is a marketplace commission or referral fee?

It is the percentage of each sale a marketplace keeps for listing your product and bringing you the customer. It usually depends on the product category, and on some platforms on the price band too.

Is GST charged on marketplace fees in India?

Yes. Marketplaces in India charge 18% GST on their commission, fixed and other fees. If you are GST registered you can normally claim it back as input tax credit; if not, it is a real cost.

Should I include shipping in the commission?

It depends on the platform. Some charge commission on the item price only, others on the total the buyer pays including shipping. Tick the box if yours charges on shipping too.

Why is my settlement lower than this calculator shows?

Settlements also deduct returns, refunds, advertising, storage or fulfilment fees and TCS/TDS withholdings in India. Those are not per-order fees, so add an average amount to other costs.

Can I use this for Amazon or Flipkart?

Yes, as long as you enter the current fees for your category from the platform's fee page. Fees there change often, so the calculator does not pre-fill them.
