Amazon FBA Fees Explained (2026): Referral, Fulfillment, Peak and Surcharge
On this page
Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) lets you send stock to Amazon's warehouses and let Amazon pick, pack, ship and handle returns. It can win you the Prime badge and a lot of sales, but the fees stack up quickly, and in 2026 they changed in three ways most sellers notice: fulfillment fees now depend on the item's price, a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge applies from April, and holiday peak rates run from 15 October to 14 January.
This guide walks through each fee using the rates Amazon publishes for the US marketplace, then puts them together in examples. To check your own product:

The four fees on every FBA sale
- Referral fee: Amazon's commission, a percentage of the total sales price including any shipping and gift wrap, with a minimum per item in most categories.
- FBA fulfillment fee: a fixed amount per unit based on the product's size tier, shipping weight and price.
- Fuel and logistics surcharge: 3.5% of the fulfillment fee since 17 April 2026.
- Selling plan: $39.99 a month (Professional) or $0.99 per item sold (Individual).
On top of these, FBA sellers pay monthly storage, and some pay inbound placement, aged inventory and returns processing fees. Those depend on how long stock sits and how you ship it in, so they are covered separately below.
1. Referral fees by category
Most categories pay 15% with a $0.30 minimum. The main exceptions:
- Consumer electronics, computers and full-size appliances: 8%.
- Clothing and accessories: 5% up to $15, 10% from $15 to $20 and 17% above $20.
- Beauty, health, personal care and baby products: 8% for items $10 or less, 15% above.
- Jewelry: 20% on the first $250 and 5% on the rest. Watches: 16% up to $1,500 and 3% above.
- Electronics accessories: 15% up to $100 and 8% above. Furniture: 15% up to $200 and 10% above.
- Books, music and video: 15% plus a $1.80 closing fee per item.

2. FBA fulfillment fees
The fulfillment fee depends on three things:
- Size tier. Small standard items fit within 15 × 12 × 0.75 inches and weigh up to 1 lb. Large standard items fit within 18 × 14 × 8 inches and weigh up to 20 lb. Small and large bulky items are bigger, up to 50 lb.
- Shipping weight. For most items Amazon uses the greater of the actual weight and the dimensional weight (length × width × height ÷ 139). Our dimensional weight calculator works this out.
- Price band. Items under $10 pay the lowest rates, items from $10 to $50 pay more, and since January 2026 items over $50 pay a little more again.
For example, a large standard item weighing up to 12 oz costs $3.38 to fulfil if it sells for under $10, $4.20 between $10 and $50 and $4.46 over $50 (non-peak rates).
3. Holiday peak fees and the fuel surcharge
From 15 October 2026 to 14 January 2027, Amazon applies its holiday peak rate card. For the 12 oz large standard item above in the $10–$50 band, the fee rises from $4.20 to $4.48. Since 17 April 2026, a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge is added on top of every fulfillment fee, at both peak and non-peak rates.
Worked example: a $25 kitchen gadget
A seller on the Professional plan sells 100 units a month of a $25 gadget that weighs 12 oz in the large standard tier. It costs $6 to make and ship to Amazon.
- Referral fee: 15% × $25 = $3.75
- FBA fee: $4.20, plus 3.5% surcharge = $4.35
- Plan: $39.99 ÷ 100 units = $0.40
- Total Amazon fees: about $8.50 (34% of the price)
The payout is $16.50, and after the $6 product cost the profit is $10.50, a 42% margin. During holiday peak the FBA fee with surcharge rises to $4.64 and profit falls to $10.21.
Worked example: why the price band matters
The same 2 lb large standard product earns very differently either side of $50:
- At $49, fees are $13.45 (referral $7.35, FBA with surcharge $6.02, plan $0.08).
- At $55, fees are $14.62 (referral $8.25, FBA with surcharge $6.29).
The higher band only adds 27 cents to the fulfillment fee, so it rarely changes a pricing decision, but it is worth knowing when you test prices around $50 or $10.
Costs not included above
- Monthly storage: charged per cubic foot, higher from October to December.
- Aged inventory surcharges: for stock stored longer than about six months.
- Inbound placement fees: depending on how many Amazon warehouses you ship to.
- Returns processing: for categories with high return rates.
- Advertising: Sponsored Products is optional but most FBA sellers use it.
Add an average per-unit amount for these to your costs so your profit is realistic.
The bottom line
Amazon's fees are higher than they first appear, and in 2026 they depend on price, season and a new surcharge. Before you send stock in, run the product through the Amazon FBA fee calculator with peak and non-peak rates, add storage and advertising, and make sure the margin still works.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Amazon take per sale with FBA?
For a typical $25 item, around a third of the price: a 15% referral fee, an FBA fee of about $4–5 including the surcharge, and the plan fee. Cheap items lose a bigger share; expensive, light items lose less.
When are Amazon's peak fulfillment fees?
In 2026 the peak period runs from 15 October 2026 to 14 January 2027.
Is FBA worth it?
FBA often wins on items that sell quickly, are small and light, and benefit from Prime. For heavy, slow-moving or very cheap items, shipping them yourself (FBM) can be more profitable. Switch the Amazon FBA calculator to "I ship it myself" to compare.
What is the Amazon referral fee minimum?
$0.30 per item in most categories. Some categories, including grocery and media, have no minimum.
