How to use the calculator
- Enter the cost price – what you pay your supplier for one unit.
- Enter the selling price – the price your customer sees.
- Choose the GST rate for your product category. Pick 0% if you are not GST registered.
- Choose whether your selling price already includes GST (most marketplace and MRP prices do) or whether GST is added on top.
- If you are GST registered and your cost includes GST, choose Yes for input tax credit (ITC) so the GST you can claim back is not counted as a cost.
How the numbers are calculated
When the price includes GST, the price before GST is selling price ÷ (1 + GST rate). For example, a ₹1,180 price with 18% GST is ₹1,000 plus ₹180 GST. The ₹180 belongs to the government, so your profit is worked out on the ₹1,000.
- Net profit = price before GST − cost
- Profit margin = net profit ÷ price before GST × 100
- Markup = net profit ÷ cost × 100
Margin vs markup – what is the difference?
Margin compares profit with the selling price; markup compares profit with the cost. If you buy at ₹100 and sell at ₹150 (before GST), your profit is ₹50: that is a 50% markup but only a 33.3% margin. Many new sellers mix these up and price too low – always check your margin.
