“Coach Walz” energises Democrats by making a personal appeal to middle-class Americans.
Tim Walz is running for vice president, but for a while on Wednesday night, it felt like he was campaigning to be the nation’s high school football coach.
Before he spoke, roughly a dozen of the players on the team he helped coach to a Minnesota state championship decades ago ran on stage, some wearing their old high school jerseys, bouncing to the blasting horns of a marching band.
Once Mr. Walz did appear, delegates in the packed arena waved signs that read “Coach Walz,” and the crowd chanted, “Coach, coach, coach!”

Biden informs Netanyahu that a cease-fire is necessary for Israelis by 2024.
US President Joe Biden has emphasized the urgency of reaching a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Biden stated the importance of removing any remaining obstacles blocking an agreement with Hamas and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to help defend Israel against all threats from Iran, including its proxy terrorist groups Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. The White House wrapped up a diplomatic tour of the Middle East, pushing for a deal that could end the war. Israel plans to keep troops in a strip of land along the border between Gaza and Egypt, known as the Philadelphi Corridor, in the event of any such deal. Hamas has so far insisting on a total withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Egypt also opposes the presence of Israeli troops along its border with Gaza. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Israel had agreed to a “US bridging proposal” after a three-hour meeting with Netanyahu in Jerusalem. A new round of ceasefire talks is set to take place in Cairo this weekend, with US, Israeli, Egyptian, and Qatari representatives in attendance. Hamas has so far not said they will attend, but it is believed they are continuing to receive updates on the negotiations from Egyptian and Qatari mediators.

2024 is when the GCSE and BTec results are anticipated.
Students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will receive GCSE, BTec Tech Awards and other level 2 qualifications on Thursday.
It is the first year that GCSE grades are expected to be similar to 2019 across all three nations.
It follows a growth in the percentage of passes in 2020 and 2021, when exams were cancelled because of Covid, and a phased effort to bring them back down.
Last year, fewer passes in English and math GCSE exams meant more students in England needed to resit.
About 200,000 students are due to get results for BTec Tech Awards, BTec Firsts and BTec Level 2 Technical courses, while about 120,000 will receive results for Cambridge Nationals.

Will Democrats attempt to exploit one of their greatest vulnerabilities in 2024?
House Democratic Chair Pete Aguilar and California Representative Pete Aguilar defended Kamala Harris’s handling of border issues at the Democratic National Convention. Democrats aimed to confront one of their biggest political weaknesses, praising the Biden administration’s efforts and calling Harris “tough as nails” on the issue. Donald Trump and his Republican allies have made the border a focal point of their criticism of Ms. Harris, calling her a “failed border czar”. Democrats have credited the decrease to recent actions by the administration to curb illegal immigration, including an executive order signed by President Joe Biden in June that allows US immigration officials to deport migrants without processing their asylum claims. A recent poll from CBS found that 48% of likely voters believe crossings will go up if Ms. Harris wins, while a vast majority, 72%, said they believe they will decrease under Trump. Democrats sought to show the party’s shift toward a tougher immigration message on an issue considered to be one of their biggest political vulnerabilities.
Despite polls showing immigration as a top concern for many voters, some delegates suggest that it will be a secondary electoral issue for many. Others, like Illinois Democratic Representative Jonathan Jackson, believe that work remains to be done to address migrant issues, as economically depressed communities of color bear the brunt of any influx. Migrants, mostly from Venezuela, are milling about shelters just a few miles away as politicians discuss policies that could determine their fate. Many migrants are familiar with immigration, the border, and conceptions of “migrant crime” playing a prominent role in the US political debate. Some migrants feel that politicians unfairly demonize migrants, who don’t understand the reasons why many left their countries for the perilous journey to the US.
