Raducanu, Alcaraz, Boulter and heat – Monday’s Wimbledon preview

Coverage:
Wimbledon kicks off on Monday with live coverage across BBC TV, radio, and online platforms. Fans can follow all the action on BBC iPlayer, the Red Button, Connected TVs, and the BBC mobile app. A full coverage guide is available.

Wimbledon 2025 Begins
The prestigious Championships begin with 23 British players featured in the men’s and women’s singles—the highest number of home participants since 1984. Fourteen of them are scheduled to play on the opening day of the 138th edition of the tournament. Among the headliners are Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu, both set to play on the show courts.

Defending men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz, bidding for a third straight title, starts his campaign on Monday, as does women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Scorching Start Expected
A blazing hot day is forecasted, with temperatures in south-west London expected to soar up to 33°C. This could be a key factor for players, as the heat will test endurance and performance.
For context, the hottest ever opening day at Wimbledon was in 2001, when temperatures reached 29.3°C. The hottest day on record at the tournament was 35.7°C on 1 July 2015.

Centre Court Action
As tradition dictates, the reigning men’s champion Alcaraz opens proceedings on Centre Court at 13:30 BST, facing 38-year-old Italian Fabio Fognini. Following that match, British number one Katie Boulter faces Spanish ninth seed Paula Badosa. The day concludes with German third seed Alexander Zverev playing against France’s Arthur Rinderknech.

Court One Highlights
On Court One, top seed Aryna Sabalenka starts play at 13:00 BST, taking on Canadian Carson Branstine, who earned her place through qualifying after defeating French Open semi-finalist Lois Boisson and former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu.
Next up is Britain’s Jacob Fearnley versus talented Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca. The final match on Court One sees an all-British face-off between Emma Raducanu and 17-year-old Mimi Xu from Swansea.
