Two people with knowledge of the situation told CNN that national security adviser Mike Waltz is anticipated to leave the Trump administration in the next few days, marking the first significant staff reorganization since the president took office in January.

According to a source familiar with the situation, Waltz’s employment has been in limbo since it was made clear to him earlier this week that his tenure as head of the National Security Council was coming to an end. According to several people familiar with the discussions, Alex Wong, the deputy national security adviser, and other national security advisers are also anticipated to leave, though it is unclear when.

That person stated that Waltz’s replacement as national security adviser is being considered, but no decision has been made, for special envoy Steve Witkoff, a real estate developer and friend of President Donald Trump.a real estate developer and friend of President Donald Trump. Witkoff has led discussions with Russia and Iran as Trump looks for international deals.

After the incident, Trump contemplated firing him, but decided against it because he did not want to give his adversaries a false sense of victory and wanted to prevent the kind of chaos that marred his first administration.

Trump supported him at the time, but according to four sources, Waltz’s reputation never fully recovered, and he lost influence with senior aides in the West Wing. Even before the Signal scandal, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles was among the officials who had the least amount of admiration for Waltz.

Trump seems less worried about the appearance of chaos one hundred days into his second term. Waltz’s possible removal has been increasingly characterized as a “when, not if” by a number of people with knowledge of the situation.

“Of all of them, we never thought he would be the first [to be fired],” said a senior western official.

Behind the scenes, some administration officials had begun quietly discussing an off-ramp for Waltz over the last several days. Trump has expressed frustration with him on multiple fronts, including the Signal episode. He was also irritated the Florida congressional race to replace Waltz was closer than expected, two sources familiar with the conversations told CNN.

But on Thursday, one administration official suggested the search for a soft landing spot was no longer a top priority.
