Researchers and the general public were given access to thousands of previously unreleased classified documents pertaining to the JFK assassination on Tuesday by the Trump administration.

On November 22, 1963, Texas Governor John Connally and his wife, Nelly Connally, and President Kennedy were shot and killed in Dallas while traveling in a motorcade with his wife, Jacqueline Kennedy. At Dallas Love Field, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson took the oath of office aboard Air Force One, and Kennedy was declared dead at Parkland Memorial Hospital thirty minutes later.

Since then, there has been a lot of conjecture surrounding Kennedy’s murder, including conspiracy theories and inquiries into what the government is aware of. A congressional committee reexamined the case in the 1970s and concluded that it was possible that multiple people fired shots, even though the Warren Commission concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the months following the assassination.

What was the number of JFK assassination files made public?

A little over 2,000 files were released, totaling more than 63,000 pages.

The documents’ contents and whether they include any previously undisclosed information are unclear at this time, according to USA Today. According to historians, it would take some time to evaluate the deluge of files and determine whether they were substantially different from earlier releases. 

Why did Trump release files on the JFK assassination?

On January 23, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the release of government records pertaining to the assassinations of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., Kennedy’s brother and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, and Kennedy himself.

The order declares, “Their families and the American people deserve transparency and truth.” “It is imperative that all documents pertaining to these assassinations be made public as soon as possible for the benefit of the country.”

“And everything will be revealed,” Trump said as he signed the order, adding, “A lot of people are waiting for this… for years, for decades.”

The Peace Corps and JFK’s speech at the University of Michigan

The University of Michigan claims that on October 14, 1960, then-President John F. Kennedy delivered an impromptu campaign speech to students on the steps of Michigan Union.

He urged students to spend a few years of their lives working in developing nations during his speech.

One thousand University of Michigan students signed a petition after the speech urging the creation of the Peace Corps program.

In order to address local issues, the U.S. government agency now deploys volunteers to foreign communities. The organization was founded in 1961 and has since sent over 240,000 volunteers to 60 countries.
