Just weeks after Brooke Schofield addressed her troubling racist tweets, yet another influencer is taking her turn in hot water. For weeks, TikToks and Redditors alleged that Alix Earle — the TikTok star known for debriefing her late-night debauchery during “Get Ready With Me” videos — used racial slurs in online posts from ten years ago. On Monday, after weeks of silence, the 23-year-old owned up to the posts in an Instagram Story.

Earlier this month, screenshots posted to Reddit showed Earle allegedly using racial slurs in comments from 2014. The user presumed to be Earle, with the screen name “Alixxxxxx,” was shown repeatedly using a slur while responding to various posts on ASKfm. The platform, which was founded in 2010 and was popular while Earle was a teenager, prompts users to ask and answer questions anonymously. Earle, however, allegedly left her comments attached to her username and profile image. On Monday night, the 23-year-old finally addressed the posts, both confirming their existence and apologizing for using racist language (without calling it that).

“I am taking accountability and want to make it clear that I was 13 years old and did not understand the deeply offensive meaning behind that word,” she wrote on her Instagram Story. “There is no excuse for saying that word in any context or at any age. That absolutely is not the way I speak or what I stand for.”

“I am deeply sorry that my words have hurt many and have led people to believe that I have any prejudice in my heart,” she continued. “I regret how I handled this situation, allowing too many people to talk me out of saying something for too long… There is no one to blame but myself for not standing my ground and going with my gut to speak out right away.”

Earle then called any rumors that she tried to trademark the past posts (which had been swirling on TikTok, mainly due to activity in the sub-Reddit r/AlixEarleSnark) “ridiculous and untrue,” and she claims that no brands have canceled partnerships with her as of Monday.

Who is Alix Earle?

Alix Earle is a TikTok star who rose to popularity in February 2020, when she was a student at the University of Miami. By 2022, her chaotic GRWM and cystic-acne videos propelled her to fame. The following year, she was added to Alex Cooper’s Unwell podcasting umbrella as the host of the Hot Mess podcast, and she is currently dating Braxton Berrios, a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins.

If her current controversy plays out similarly to the Brooke Schofield mess, we could expect second and third apologies from Earle herself, Cooper, or the many brands she promotes, including Neutrogena and Sports Illustrated.

No. In 2023, Earle was criticized for adding Mielle hair oil, a popular oil created for and by Black women, to her 2022 Amazon purchases. “I’ve only been using this for a little over a month, and I’ve already seen tremendous hair growth,” she said. Almost immediately, Black women commented under the video, “If y’all sell our Mielle hair oil I will riot,” the reason being that the number of products made specifically for Black women is much more limited compared to what is available for white women. Earle never addressed those concerns.
